Ever since I can remember, I have had sensitive skin. When I was in middle school, I recall waking up one morning, itchy as ever. Looking at my skin, I had broken out in a horrible rash. It was rather embarrassing going to school that day as there wasn’t a spot on my body that didn’t have a rash! We later found out my Dad had bought an off brand laundry detergent that didn’t sit well with my skin.
Since then, I have been super careful to only try products that are made for sensitive skin. I read ingredient labels on everything and am always willing to pay the extra money for products that are particularly created for sensitive skin. Before making any purchases, I carefully research and examine all products before using them on my skin.
And of course, my kiddos have inherited my easily breakout-get rashes type-sensitive skin. Jakson and Olivia get eczema quite frequently, especially in the winter months in Nebraska. Certain bath soaps have made both of them breakout in rashes, so we have to be super careful on which ones we use on them. We are very careful on laundry detergents as well, which is why I felt the need to share my experiences on this post!
As parents, it can get overwhelming looking at the amount of options we have on the market. Every product is marketed to us and we often question if we are buying the right product for our precious babies. After trial and error on many different detergents, I have listed my reviews on my favorite detergents for baby. Everyone in our household has personally tried each detergent listed and I recommend them for your little ones! (And you too!)
In my recommendations for the best laundry detergents for baby, I have used the app, “Think Dirty” to compare laundry detergents. I am kind of obsessed with it and look up every product I have an interest in purchasing. The Think Dirty app identifies the potential risks associated with personal care products that everyday consumers use. They focus on the possible impact of a given product on an individual’s health related to Carcinogenicity, Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity and/or Allergenicity and Immunotoxicity.
I also love that the app rates based on Allergencity, making it extremely useful for those of us that have sensitive skin. Especially for our babies!
In the recommendations below, I have concentrated on three areas I focus on when choosing a laundry detergent:
- Hypoallergenic-causes fewer allergic reactions than other products that are not hypoallergenic
- Fragrance Free
- Specific “Think Dirty” app recommendations
The Best Laundry Detergents For Baby
1. All Free and Clear Laundry Detergent
This is my first choice for laundry detergent for a number of reasons! First, it’s rated a 2 on the Think Dirty app, which is really good! (The app rates from 0-10, 0 being the best). This is also my go to laundry detergent. It’s easy to pick it up at the grocery store because it is sold just about anywhere. It’s the detergent we use the most, because it’s readily available when we need it and works great! With it being free of dyes and perfumes, it’s great for sensitive skin:)
2. Green Shield Organic Baby Laundry Detergent
Another great fragrance free laundry detergent that doesn’t have any bad smells after many washes on your clothes. The Think Dirty app rates it at a 3 currently. I also love that it is a USDA Certified Organic laundry detergent! Although I am not a cloth diaper person, I have heard that is works really well with cloth diapers too! When using it, our clothes felt so clean!
3. Simple Truth Laundry Detergent
I love that there are minimal ingredients in this laundry detergent, so less things to make our skin have a reaction too. It will definitely get your clothes clean, and doesn’t have any weird residue smells. Another fragrance free laundry detergent that I recommend for you and your littles. The Think Dirty app rates it as a 3 too! (Sold only at Kroger Co. family stores)
4. Purex Free and Clear Laundry Detergent
Purex Free and Clear is another go to brand for us as it is sold just about anywhere. We have used it a number of times and have never had any rashes or breakouts with anyone in our family. Of course it’s free and clear and is meant for sensitive skin! The Think Dirty app currently rates it at a 4-so still good! (3-6 in the Think Dirty app is rated as half n’ half).
5. Babyganics Laundry Detergent Fragrance Free
Because I am a very loyal Babyganics brand consumer, I had to list the Babyganics laundry detergent. I love all of their products for babies-soaps, bug spray, sun screen-just to name a few. I do think it is a little pricier at times, but thank goodness for the Cartwheel app at Target:) On the Think Dirty app, the detergent is rated at a 5. We have always been content with the detergent, and our littles have never had any reactions to it! Another great option for sensitive skin!
If you’re looking for an all natural and organic option to use instead of dryer sheets, you NEED to try dryer balls. We absolutely LOVE dryer balls in our house and are so glad we made the switch from dryer sheets. They are chemical free, which will help with sensitive skin. Also, they can be used over and over again! (Up to 1 year). I love the ones below.
Do you have any detergents that are you favorites? If so, I’d love to hear what they are and your experiences with them!
